Commemoration of the Declaration of 9 May 1950 and the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome

On 9 May 1967, "Europe Day", a ceremony was held in the European Parliament in Strasbourg to commemorate the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950, as well as the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome.
The first lines of the Declaration of 9 May 1950, which had been jointly written down by Robert Schuman, French Minister for Foreign Affairs, and his adviser and friend Jean Monnet, called France, Germany and other European countries to pool together their coal and steel production as "the first concrete foundation of a European federation". Everything (the European construction), therefore, began that day. That is why during the Milan Summit of EU leaders in 1985 it was decided to celebrate 9 May as "Europe Day".
The Treaty of Rome, establishing the European Economic Community (EEC), signed in Rome on 25 March 1957, and entered into force on 1 January 1958. The Treaty establishing the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) was signed at the same time and the two are therefore jointly known as the Treaties of Rome.
