European Capital of Innovation 2016 awards ceremony

The European Commission has awarded the European Capital of Innovation (iCapital) award 2016 to Amsterdam. The results were announced by Carlos Moedas, Member of the EC in charge of Research, Science and Innovation, Markku Markkula, President of the Committee of the Regions (CoR), and Robert-Jan Smits, Director-General of DG "Research and Innovation" of the EC, at an award ceremony in the European Committee of the Regions. Amsterdam was chosen by a panel of independent experts out of shortlist of 9 finalist cities including Amsterdam, Berlin, Eindhoven, Glasgow, Milan, Paris, Oxford, Turin and Vienna which were respectively represented at the ceremony by Gerard den Boer, Manager for EU Grants and Incentives at the Department for Economic Development of the City of Amsterdam, Anja Lurson, Policy Advisor at the Office of the Land Berlin to the EU, Rob van Gijzel, Mayor of Eindhoven, Maureen Burke, Councillor of the city of Glasgow, Pierfrancesco Maran, Councillor of Mobility and Environment at the City of Milan, Bob Price, Leader of the Council of the City of Oxford, Carine Saloff-Coste, Director for Economic Development at Ville de Paris, Enzo Lavolta, Deputy Mayor of Torino, and Birgit Ginzler, Head of Communcations at TINA Vienna - Smart City Agency & Energy Center! The two cities which won the 2nd and 3rd prizes were Turin and Paris. During the ceremony, a gift - a limited edition of a framed graphene wafer designed by University of Manchester Nobel Laureate, Konstantin Novoselov - was offered by the city of Manchester, 2016 European City of Science, to the 9 finalists cities.
