Lithuania's entry into the euro area

Algirdas Butkevičius, Lithuanian Prime Minister, and Taavi Rõivas, Estonian Prime Minister, participated in the ceremony organised in Vilnius to celebrate Lithuania's entry into the euro area, which became the 19th Member of the euro area. The two Prime Ministers notably made their first cash withdrawal in euro from a cash machine of the Lithuanian capital.
The previous national currency, the litas, was phased out during a transitional two-week dual circulation period when both currencies had legal tender status in the country. Lithuania's adoption of the euro took place on the 15th anniversary of the launch of the euro in 1999. 19 Member States and 337 million Europeans shared henceforth the same currency.
