Visit of Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC, and Carl Bildt, Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, to Iraq

Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, went to Baghdad where she met with Hussain al-Shahristani, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister, acting Minister for Foreign Affairs. They together gave a joint press conference with Carl Bildt, Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs. Kristalina Georgieva and Carl Bildt also attended several meetings, notably with Fuad Masum, President of Iraq.
The aim of this visit was to address the worsening humanitarian situation in the country. Three Member States were already providing assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism following a request by the Iraqi authorities to the EC. The United Kingdom had sent kitchen sets for the displaced Iraqis, while Sweden and Italy had provided tents, blankets and other in-kind assistance. Several Member States stood ready to deploy humanitarian experts to support the United Nations' immediate relief operations on the ground. The EC was coordinating the assistance via its Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC).
