Launch of the first calls of the Joint Technology Initiatives under Horizon 2020

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Transport and Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Euro (pro term), Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Digital Agenda, and Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Member of the EC in charge of Research, Innovation and Science, attended the launch of the first calls of the Joint Technology Initiatives (JTI) under Horizon 2020. Stefania Giannini, Italian Minister for Education, Universities and Research; President in office of the Council of the EU, and Jerzy Buzek, Member of the EP, were also present.
Research partnerships between the EU, the private sector and Member States presented their first calls for projects and partners under Horizon 2020, the EU's €80 billion research and innovation programme. Worth a total of €1.13 billion in public funding, which would be complemented by a comparable amount from the private partners, the first round of funding would go into projects that would improve people's lives as well as boost international competitiveness of Europe's industry. Topics included new treatments for diabetes and eye disease and a roll out of dozens of hydrogen-powered road vehicles and refuelling stations.
