Visit of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, to Estonia

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Tallinn where he met with Taavi Rõivas, Estonian Prime Minister, and the two other Prime Ministers of the Baltic States, Laimdota Straujuma, Latvian Prime Minister, and Algirdas Butkevičius, Lithuanian Prime Minister. The meeting took place one day after the adoption by the EC of the partnership agreements between the Commission and the governments of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The quick adoption of these agreements was the result of the excellent cooperation the EC had with the three respective countries.
The agreements opened up for European structural and investment funding for the 2014-2020 period. The strategies laid down by the three Baltic States were key for the optimal use of European Structural and Investment Funds for smart and sustainable growth. They linked the new approach of the European cohesion policy and the Europe 2020 priorities. These European investments would help to boost growth and create lasting jobs through support to innovation, training and education as well as a low carbon, resource-efficient economy.
José Manuel Barroso then gave an interview to Priit Kuusk, Estonian journalist, at the headquarters of the Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR). The President and Taavi Rõivas also visited the E-Estonia Showroom, operated by Enterprise Estonia, which presented e-solutions for public and private sector. They then went to Laulasmaa to visit the Arvo Pärt Centre, founded by Arvo Pärt, Estonian composer, to create opportunities for preserving and researching the creative heritage of the composer in his native country. José Manuel Barroso ended his visit to Estonia by a train trip from Klooga to Tallinn.
