Visit of Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC, to the Pacific Islands

Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, in collaboration with Murray McCully, Minister for Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, undertook a joint mission in the Pacific Islands aiming at strengthening development cooperation in the area from 23 to 27 April. The visit was mostly an opportunity to learn about several ongoing projects based on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. These projects, which are co-financed by New Zealand and the EU, have been carried out in Samoa, Tuvalu, Kiribati (including Christmas Island) and the Cook Islands
Andris Piebalgs kicked off his tour in Apia, the capital city of Samoa, where he visited the Faleata Sports Complex which uses solar power. He also visited the site of a Hydro Power Plants Rehabilitation Project, and inaugurated the new offices of the EU Delegation to Samoa.
He went to Tuvalu to visit a solar panel installation project to provide renewable electricity in three of Tuvalu's outer islands, which will make reliable clean electricity available for the first time.
Kiribati was the third leg of his tour. In the island of Tarawa, Andris Piebalgs visited the new laboratory of the Central Hospital of Tungaru. In Bairiki, he visited the Naval Training Center and also participated in the ceremony to commemorate Anzac Day. He then went to the Pier of Betio to participate in the ceremony for the presentation, barge, funded by the EU, to the Government of Kiribati.
He also participated in the Health Laboratory in Kiribati dedicated to monitoring and responding to environmental diseases, such as vector-borne diseases
In Kiritimati (also called Christmas Island), Andris Piebalgs visited several villages, as well as a project that will provide people with access to an environmentally-safe source of construction material, therefore protecting the vulnerable shores from perturbation caused by aggregate mining.
Finally, Andris Piebalgs ended his tour with a visit to the Cook Islands: he went to Rarotonga and Muri, to visit the construction, co-financed with the Asian Development Bank, of six photovoltaic power plants in the region, as well as a water supply pilot project.
