Brussels Forum organised by the German Marshall Fund of the United States, 21-23/03/2014

The Brussels Forum, which was organised by the German Marshall Fund of the United States, was held on 21, 22 and 23 March 2014. Every year, the high-level event gathers the most influential U.S., European, and global political, corporate, and intellectual leaders to address the current global challenges.
On the occasion of this edition, Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, participated in the session on the situation in Syria which was entitled "The fate of Syria three years on". The Syrian conflict has caused a serious humanitarian crisis both in Syria and in neighboring countries. In 2013, a growing number of people have been displaced, both inside the country and in neighboring countries. According to figures from OCHA in January 2014, 9.3 million people in Syria need help, an increase of 230% in just one year.
Later in the day, Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, participated in a debate on the situation in Ukraine.
On 21 November 2013, Ukraine had announced the suspension of the preparations for the signature of the Association Agreement, including the DCFTA, with the EU. The signature was initially scheduled to take place at the Eastern Partnership Summit, held in Vilnius, on 28-29 November 2013. Following this suspension, several unprecedented events occurred in the country forcing Ukraine to face many political, economic and security issues.
Finally, Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, participated together with Michael Froman, US Trade Representative, in the session on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), whose negotiations are ongoing.
