Visit of Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC, to Myanmar/Burma

Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, went to Yangon and Nay Pyi Daw, ending his four-day visit to the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as part of ongoing efforts to bolster the EU's trade links between the two parties.
During his stay, Karel De Gucht met with Dr Kan Zaw, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development of Myanmar/Burma, and U Win Myint, Minister for Commerce of Myanmar/Burma, as well as Daw Aung San Suu Ky, Chairperson and General Secretary of the National League for Democracy of Myanmar/Burma.
He also delivered a speech during his visit to the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Umfcci).
With Dr Kan Zaw, Karel De Gucht launched negotiations for an investment protection agreement between the European Union and Myanmar/Burma, following the recent reinstatement of trade preferences under the Everything But Arms scheme in July 2013.
Myanmar/Burma was the last leg of his tour, after his visits to Vietnam and Cambodia.
