Visit of Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC, to Bucharest for the launch of the Erasmus+ programme

Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, travelled to Bucharest to discuss the education and employment prospects of Romania's young people.
She addressed an event organised by the Ministry for National Education and the EC on tackling the challenges faced by 'NEETs' (young people not in employment, education or training).
In that context, she launched Erasmus+, the EU's new funding programme for education, training, youth and sport, which will provide grants for 120 000 Romanians to study, train, gain work experience or volunteer abroad over the next seven years – 50% more than under previous EU programmes.
Androulla Vassiliou also visited the visit Roma projects in the capital, such as the one developed by the NGO "Matias" which opened a daycare center for children in collaboration with the School No. 1 in Jilava, and the support of the Roma Education Fund.
She ended her stay with a visit to the Roma Culture Museum.
During her trip, Androulla Vassiliou was accompanied by Remus Pricopie, Romanian Minister for National Education, and George Soros, Hungarian philanthropist and long-time campaigner for Roma rights.
