Visit of Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC, to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda

Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, embarked on a visit of several days to the Great Lakes region, in Central Africa. He first went to Kinshasa, where he announced 620 million euro of new EU support to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for the period 2014-2020. Andris Piebalgs travelled to Central Africa together with Jean-Pascal Labille, Belgian Minister for Public Enterprises and Development Cooperation, in charge of Larger Towns Policy.
During his trip to DRC, Andris Piebalgs met with a number of senior members of the administration. He inaugurated the new EU financed Palais de Justice in Kinshasa.
He travelled to the east of the DRC, among other things to visit an education centre for children in Goma and met Denis Mukwege, Director of the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, where thousands of victims of sexual violence are treated.
Andris Piebalgs then went to Rwanda, second leg of his tour.
In Kigali, he discussed with Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda. On this occasion, he announced 460 million euro of new EU support for the period 2014-2020, as well as a new nutrition programme (30 million euro). The project will support the national strategy to eliminate malnutrition in Rwanda targeting the high chronic malnutrition of young children.
