Visit of Mark Rutte, Dutch Prime Minister, to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Mark Rutte, Dutch Prime Minister. The President notably commended the Prime Minister and his coalition for the central part they played in steering the Dutch economy through the worst of the economic crisis. He added that Europe had turned a corner and growth was returning thanks to profound reforms at national level and moves to deepen integration in the EU, especially in the euro area.
To boost growth and bring down high unemployment, José Manuel Barroso Mark Rutte agreed that it was necessary to do everything they could to maintain sound public finances and make economies fitter to reforms for increased competitiveness.
The Netherlands had also agreed previous months important reforms to the housing market, healthcare, labour market and energy sector, which set a good example and would help to make the Dutch economy more competitive. At EU level the immediate priority was to agree on a Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM) for banks before the European Parliament elections in May 2014. The Netherlands had consistently supported deeper integration in the euro area, and the Banking Union in particular, for which José Manuel Barroso was very grateful.
