Visit of Johannes Hahn and Maria Damanaki, Members of the EC, to Greece

Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, and Maria Damanaki, Member of the EC in charge of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, went to Athens to participate in the a high-level Stakeholder Conference on the EU macro-regional strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian region. The conference marked the end of a wide consultation that has involved civil society and stakeholders across the eight countries. The results of the consultation will feed into a formal proposal later this year from Johannes Hahn, for a tailor made strategy that reflects the needs and the capacities of the region. It followed a request from EU leaders in December 2012 to deliver the new macro-regional strategy by the end of 2014.
During the conference, Johannes Hahn and Maria Damanaki met with the Ministers for Foreign Affairs from the countries involved, which currently form part of the existing Adriatic Ionian Initiative, as well as several representatives of the Greek Government. Among them: Antonis Samaras, Greek Prime Minister and President in office of the Council of the EU, Ioannis Michelakis, Greek Minister for the Interior, and Evangelos Vénizélos, Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Johannes Hahn went to Lamia on his own, where he met with Christos Staikouras, Greek alternate Minister for Finance.
