Nuclear Security Summit, 24-25/03/2014

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, participated in the 3rd Nuclear Security Summit (NSS). This Summit brought together to The Hague leaders from 53 countries and Heads of 4 International Organisations to discuss progress in efforts to strengthen global nuclear security.
This 3rd Summit was an important occasion to measure progress in efforts to strengthen global nuclear security and take stock of results achieved in the past four years since the 2010 Washington and 2012 Seoul Summits, where nuclear safety issues were discussed. These initiatives started after Barack Obama, President of the United States, called nuclear terrorism one of the greatest threats to international security, in Prague in 2009.
The EC was strongly committed to ensuring nuclear safety in the EU and in the world. After the Fukushima accident in March 2011, stress tests on nuclear power plants were applied in many Member States leading to national action plans. A revised Nuclear Safety Directive was expected to be adopted by the European Council before summer 2014.
The first day of the Summit concluded on the adoption of "The Hague Declaration" on the situation in Ukraine by the leaders of the G7 Summit who met in the Catshuis. This Declaration notably strongly condemned Russia’s illegal attempt to annex Crimea in contravention of international law and specific international obligations, and it excluded the country from the G8 Summit.
