Joint press conference by José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Günther Oettinger and Connie Hedegaard, Members of the EC, on the launch of the EU framework on Climate and Energy for 2030
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Günther Oettinger, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, and Connie Hedegaard, Member of the EC in charge of Climate Action, gave a joint press conference on the launch of the EU framework on Climate and Energy for 2030. The pillars of the new EU framework on Climate and Energy for 2030 were: a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40% below the 1990 level, an EU-wide binding target for renewable energy of at least 27%, renewed ambitions for energy efficiency policies, a new governance system and a set of new indicators to ensure a competitive and secure energy system. Supported by a detailed analysis on energy prices and costs, the 2030 framework would ensure regulatory certainty for investors and a coordinated approach among Member States, leading to the development of new technologies. The framework aimed to drive continued progress towards a low-carbon economy and a competitive and secure energy system that ensured affordable energy for all consumers, increased the security of the EU’s energy supplies, reduced the dependence on energy imports and created new opportunities for growth and jobs, by taking into account potential price impacts on the longer term.
