Visit of Ivica Dačić, Serbian Prime Minister and Minister for the Interior, to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Ivica Dačić, Serbian Prime Minister and Minister for the Interior. The meeting took place ahead of the Inter-governmental conference (ICG) at which the EU accession negotiations with Serbia were formally opened.
José Manuel Barroso notably congratulated the Prime Minister on the official start of EU accession negotiations with Serbia. The opening of accession negotiations was possible thanks to the Commission proposal of April 2013. He then paid tribute to Ivica Dačić and his government for their courage in the normalisation of relations with Kosovo and he took the opportunity to stress that many challenges still laid ahead for Serbia.
The EU had strong expectations that Serbia would pursue the positive momentum of 2013 beyond into 2014. José Manuel Barroso also emphasised that the progress in the normalisation with Pristina would influence the accession negotiations. He then expressed his hope that the next dialogue round to be held on 27/01/2014 between Ivica Dačić and Hashim Thaçi, Kosovan Prime Minister, would illustrate the commitment of both sides.
