Visit of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, to Latvia

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Riga to participate in a trilateral meeting with Valdis Dombrovskis, Latvian Prime Minister, and Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council. This meeting marked Latvia's entry into the euro area on 01/01/2014, which became the 18th Member of the euro area.
During their joint press conference José Manuel Barroso highlighted that Latvia was a shining example to other Member States that it was possible to come out the other side of the crisis stronger. He added that the accession of the country to the euro area was a sign of confidence in the common currency.
The President also took the opportunity to welcome the economic turnaround, and predicted 2014 would see Europe "turn the page" on the crisis. However, José Manuel Barroso warned against complacency.
