Accession of Luxembourg to the EU 'Children of Peace' initiative

Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, received Christian Braun, Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the EU, on the occasion of the accession of Luxembourg to the EU "Children of Peace" initiative. Walter Schwarzenbrunner, Director of the Directorate C "Resources, Partnerships and Operational Support" of DG "Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO)" of the EC, was also present.
On the first anniversary of the creation of this initiative, Luxembourg was the first Member State to join the EU Children of Peace initiative, the lasting legacy of the Nobel Peace Prize®, which was awarded to the EU in 2012. The initiative funded humanitarian projects helping children in conflict zones to gain access to education.
The €500 000 contributed by Luxembourg, would be used to enlarge the EU's support to projects implemented under the umbrella of EU Children of Peace. By providing children with spaces where they could learn, play, grow and heal from the trauma of war, these projects protected them from conflicts and from being recruited as child soldiers.
For the year 2012 more than 28 000 children from Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Columbia, Ecuador and Syrian refugee children in Iraq had received support through the EU Children of Peace initiative.
