Latvia's entry into the euro area

Andrus Ansip, Estonian Prime Minister, and Valdis Dombrovskis, Latvian Prime Minister, participated in the ceremony organised in Riga to celebrate Latvia's entry into the euro area, which became the 18th Member of the euro area. The two Prime Ministers notably made their first cash withdrawal in euro from a cash machine of the Latvian capital.
The previous national currency, the lat, was phased out during a transitional two-week dual circulation period when both currencies had legal tender status in the country. Latvia's adoption of the euro took place on the 15th anniversary of the launch of the euro in 1999. 18 Member States and 333 million Europeans shared henceforth the same currency.
