Presentation of the 'EU Stop Fakes' campaign by Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the EC, in Rome

Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship, went to Rome, in the toy shop "Little Big Town" in Piazza Venezia, to present the "EU Stop Fakes" campaign in the presence of Ivano Maccani, Provincial Commander of the Guardia di Finanza (Italian Finance Guard). This event aimed to highlight the dangers of counterfeit goods, especially at Christmas time, with the slogan "Give the gift of safety".
EU rules for toys imposed the highest safety requirements in the world. To ensure these laws were correctly implemented and effective it was necessary to ensure they were applied in practice by reliable and trustworthy toy manufacturers and retailers; backed up by efficient market surveillance by Member States' authorities, and, importantly, that consumers know what to look for when they bought toys for children. If one or more of these elements was missing, dangerous toys might still reach the children.
In February 2013, the EC proposed to further strengthen market surveillance through a multi-annual plan and a single legislative instrument that would reinforce the controls on products in the internal market, allowing authorities to immediately withdraw non-compliant and dangerous products. This regulation would be directly applicable and binding in all Member States. This initiative should be adopted in early 2014.
