Visit of the main UN aid personalities for humanitarian aid to Syria to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, received the main UN aid personalities for humanitarian aid to Syria: Valerie Amos, UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, António Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Anthony Lake, Executive Director of the Unicef (United Nations Children's Fund), and Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP).
Discussions focused on the humanitarian situation in Syria, which continued to deteriorate dramatically. This was why the EU had mobilized further resources, which was channelled through mandated and professional humanitarian organizations in accordance with humanitarian principles, which included the UN agencies.
The 3 contracts signed between the visitors and the EC on the same day offered additional €147 million for Syria. It was the largest ever contracts signed for humanitarian aid between the EC and its UN partners.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso reiterated that the suffering of the Syrian people was a stain on the world's conscience and he urged other donors to step up their efforts. The EC called international donors to increase their financing to cope with the dimensions of this crisis. This would be the main message of the Commission at the second pledging conference in Kuwait to be held in January 2014.
