Visit of Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC, to Greece

Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, went to Heraklion (in Crete) and then to Athens.
In Crete, he met with Stavros Arnaoutakis, Regional Governor of Crete, as well as the representatives of local authorities and entrepreneurs. They discussed how Crete can best take advantage of the new cohesion policy for 2014-2020 by specializing in sectors with growth potential. Johannes Hahn also visited some EU-funded projects, including the "Ambient Intelligence" building.
The project involves the construction of the building that will house research labs of Ambient Intelligence Foundation Institute of Computer Research and Technology (FORTH), one of the largest research centres in Greece with well-organized facilities, highly qualified personnel and a reputation as a top-level research foundation worldwide.
Johannes Hahn also visited the "Emmanouil Kouvidis" project, a tube and cable manufacturer, as well as the Heraklion Archeological Museum that was under renovation.
Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands and the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece. Due to its natural and cultural assets, its economy is predominantly based on services and tourism but the island is also specialized on agro-food sector and hosts major scientific research centres which are important players in both the Greek and European scientific fields in which they operate.
In Athens, Johannes Hahn met with several Members of the government. He also delivered a speech during the conference entitled "European policy of urban development in practice: the case of Athens".
