Visit of José Maria Pereira Neves, Cape Verdean Prime Minister, to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received José Maria Pereira Neves, Cape Verdean Prime Minister. Discussions focused on the political and economic situation of this African country, the safety of the region and the Special Partnership EU/Cape Verde. The day after, they participated together in the European Development Days 2013.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso congratulated José Maria Pereira Neves for Cape Verde's democratic stability, respect for human rights and the important economic and social progress. With a stable and consolidated parliamentary democracy, Cape Verde had become a country of medium income since 2007, having achieved great progress in the Millennium Development Goals' (MDG) framework.
The country was however still facing many challenges and the EU would continue to support Cape Verde, addressing the negative impact of the international economic and financial situation, helping to consolidate reforms, to improve competitiveness and to combat unemployment and poverty. The EU would also continue to assist the country financially through the 11th European Development Fund. The EC had proposed an envelope of €55 million for Cape Verde in the 2014-2020 period.
