Visit of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, to Colombia
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Bogotá where he met with Juan Manuel Santos, President of Colombia. It was the first time that a President of the EC visited the country.
Discussion focused on the implementation of the EU/Colombia Trade Agreement signed in August 2013, the solidarity and support of the EU to Colombia's peace and the future of their bilateral relations in the global context. The two Presidents agreed to launch negotiations for a broad Framework Agreement, which would be extensible to different areas of cooperation. The fight against climate change and how it could actively contribute to the reduction of poverty were also on the agenda.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso notably highlighted the opportune moment of his visit to the country, where for the first time there was a real possibility of reaching peace. He then ensured that the EU would continue to show solidarity towards Colombia. The President eventually confirmed to Juan Manuel Santos the EU's willingness to provide financial support for the implementation of the agreement that could be reached.
José Manuel Barroso then visited the "Basta ya!" (Enough already!) exhibition with Gonzalo Sánchez, Director of the Historical Memory Center (HMC).
