Joint press conference by José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Olli Rehn, Vice-President of the EC, and László Andor, Member of the EC, on the European Semester 2014

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Olli Rehn, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Euro, and László Andor, Member of the EC in charge of Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, gave a joint press conference on the European Semester 2014.
The biggest challenge facing Europe's economy was how to sustain the recovery that was now underway. This was the main message of this year’s Annual Growth Survey (AGS), adopted the same day by the EC. Its adoption kicked off the fourth European Semester of economic policy coordination in an environment where growth was beginning to return and Member States were making progress on correcting the imbalances that developed before the crisis.
The Commission maintained its balanced strategy for growth and jobs, and its focus on five main priorities over the following year: pursuing differentiated, growth-friendly fiscal consolidation; restoring bank lending to the economy; promoting growth and competitiveness for today and tomorrow; tackling unemployment and the social consequences of the crisis; modernising public administration.
