EU/South Korea Summit, 08/11/2013

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, participated in the 7th EU/South Korea Summit with Park Geun-hye, President of South Korea. Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, was also present. This edition of the Summit marked 50 years of diplomatic relations between the EU and South Korea. The leaders notably adopted on this occasion a joint declaration highlighting past developments in EU/South Korea relations and affirming their willingness to encourage its further development.
An agreement to facilitate the hosting of top-quality South-Korean researchers in the EU was also signed by Choi Mun-kee, South Korean Minister for Science, ICT and Future Planning, and Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Member of the EC in charge of Research, Innovation and Science.
South Korea was the first G20 country with which the EU concluded a Framework Agreement and a second generation Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Over the last decade, EU28 exports to South Korea more than doubled, from 17.7 billion euro in 2002 to a peak of 37.8 billion in 2012, accordingly to Eurostat.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso highlighted South Korea's and EU's common interest to step up cooperation in innovation, science and technology. He added that they shared the same view that prosperity in the long term needed to come from new sources of growth.
The EU and South Korea wanted to further develop their partnership beyond the bilateral context. Economic recovery, climate change and the new framework for sustainable development in a world post-2015 were also on the agenda.
