Visit by Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC, to Greece

Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, embarked on a two-day visit to the island of Corfu and the region of Epirus. This visit was part of his undertaking to visit all 13 of the Greek regions. During his stay, he met with businesses, local representatives and visited EU co financed projects. He stressed the importance of regions in Greece using the investments to support key sectors and to identify their particular assets to stimulate growth and create good lasting jobs.
In Corfu, Johannes Hahn focused on support for quality and sustainable tourism in the Ionian islands - and specifically how environmental projects are key to this in this region and beyond. Together with experts from the DG "Environment" of the EC, he met with business and local political representatives including Spyridon Spyrou, Governor of the Ionian Islands, to discuss how the treatment of waste and supply of clean water can support the islands' tourism industry. In this context, he visited the solid waste management project developed by the Temploni landfill. He also visited the construction project of a highway interchange for the Corfu airport.
In Epirus, the focus was partly on the role that EU regional funds can have in supporting the health sector and moves to modernise and reform it. Johannes Hahn met with business and stakeholders as well as Alexandros Kachrimanis, Governor of the Greek Region of Epirus. In Ioannina, Johannes Hahn visited the companies Katogi and Strofilia which rents acres of vineyards to individuals or cooperatives. He then went to the cheese shop of the Tositsa Foundation, in Metsovo.
