Visit of Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC, to Mali

Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, went to Bamako, as part of a high-level joint visit including five leaders from amongst the multilateral institutions and the organisations most active in the field of security and development in the Sahel: Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairwoman of the African Union Commission (AUC), and Donald Kaberuka, President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB). Together, they participated in the first Ministerial Meeting to establish a platform of coordination for the United Nations integrated strategy for the Sahel.
The visit started with Mali before it went on with Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad. In this context, Andris Piebalgs announced the significant new EU funding for the Sahel region for the period 2014 and 2020. The new pledge showed the commitment of the EU in putting in place a comprehensive approach in the Sahel region, involving the areas of development cooperation, humanitarian aid and support to peace and security, as illustrated by the EU strategy for security and development of the Sahel and the subsequent appointment of an EU special representative for the Sahel, Michel Reveyrand de Menthon, who accompanied Commissioner Piebalgs during the visit.
