Brussels European Council, 24-25/10/2013

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, and the Heads of State or Government of the EU met in Brussels for the European Council hosted by Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council.
The agenda of the Summit included the following subjects: digital economy, innovation and services, growth, competitiveness and jobs, and the Economic and Monetary Union (UEM).
On 25/10/2013, outside the European Council meeting, José Manuel Barroso and several Heads of State or Government of the EU discussed on the report entitled "Cut EU red tape", published by the British Government on 15/10/2013, which presented 30 priority recommendations of EU regulations.
During the joint final press conference José Manuel Barroso outlined discussions which took place on access to finance for SMEs, regulatory fitness, the trade agreement with Canada, the forthcoming Eastern Partnership Summit, and the issue of migration and refugees. He also highlighted that perhaps the most substantive discussion of the Summit was on the drama of Lampedusa on 03/10/2013, with the issue of illegal migration and refugees in Europe. The President concluded by saying that this was an important European Council with a vast agenda, and that real progress had been achieved across a whole range of areas.
