Visit of Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister, to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister. They together reached a political agreement on the key elements of a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) after months of intense negotiations between Ed Fast, Canadian Minister for International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, and Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade.
It was the first free trade agreement between the EU and a G8 country. Boosting trade relations with Canada would generate new opportunities for growth and the creation of jobs in the EU. On the basis of this political breakthrough, the negotiators were able to continue the process and settle all the remaining technical issues. Subsequently, the agreement would need to be approved by the European Council and the EP.
