Visit of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Cecilia Malmström, Member of the EC, to Lampedusa

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Cecilia Malmström, Member of the EC in charge of Home Affairs, went to Lampedusa after more than hundred African migrants died and many more were missing as a boat carrying them to the European continent sank off near the island on 03/10/2013.
The President and Cecilia Malmström paid tribute to the victims with Enrico Letta, Italian Prime Minister, and Giusi Nicolini, Mayor of Lampedusa e Linosa. They also met with several survivors from the accident.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso notably announced that the EC was ready to mobilise additional funding of up to €30 million still in 2013 to help refugees in Italy.
