Visit of Jorge Carlos Fonseca, President of Cape Verde, to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Jorge Carlos Fonseca, President of Cape Verde. Discussions focused on the domestic political and economic situation in the country. During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso highlighted the excellent cooperation between the EU and Cape Verde and he announced that the EC proposed not to reduce country's national allocation under the 11th European Development Fund, despite a general reduction in allocations for Middle Income Countries.
The President added that Cape Verde was a case of success among developing countries with a stable and consolidated parliamentary democracy and, despite the lack of natural resources, succeeding to become a middle income country in 2007 and to reach enormous progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
José Manuel Barroso eventually congratulated the country on the application for the EU's Generalised scheme of preferences (GSP+) which was a reflection of the excellent trade and political relationship between Cape Verde and the EU.
