Participation of Kristalina Georgieva and Štefan Füle, Members of the EC, at several conferences organised in the framework of the 68th General Assembly of the United Nations

Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, and Štefan Füle, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, went to New-York in the framework of the 68th General Assembly of the United Nations.
In that context, Kristalina Georgieva participated in a high-level meeting with Valerie Amos, UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, and Laurent Fabius, French Minister for Foreign Affairs, during which they called for urgent action to meet humanitarian needs in the Central African Republic. The humanitarian situation in the country is catastrophic, affecting the entire population of 4.6 million people. This year, the EC has allocated 20 million euro of humanitarian aid to the Central African Republic - a 150% increase from last year in response to the deterioration brought about by the fighting. After the meeting, a closing press conference was organised in the presence of Nicolas Tiangaye, Central African Prime Minister, and Babacar Gaye, Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office for the Central African Republic (Binuca).
Štefan Füle and Kristalina Georgieva participated together in a high level ministerial meeting on the humanitarian situation in Syria. Responding to the unprecedented humanitarian needs in and around Syria, the EU has so far mobilised almost 1.8 billion euro in relief and recovery aid from both the Commission and Member States, making it the largest international contribution accounting for a significant proportion of the overall global funding. After the high-level meeting, Kristalina Georgieva gave a joint press conference with Nick Clegg, British Deputy Prime Minister, and Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein, Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations.
Finally, Kristalina Georgieva took part in an event on the first UN World Humanitarian Summit, which will take place in Istanbul in 2016.
