Visit of Edi Rama, Albanian Prime Minister, to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Štefan Füle, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, received Edi Rama, Albanian Prime Minister. Discussions focused on the following steps in the EU integration process and on the state of play of the country's commitment to reform in the light of this process.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso recognised that Albania had already made progress towards its future in the EU, delivering solid reform results. He then called for a continued commitment and constructive political dialogue. On the economic front, José Manuel Barroso said that structural reforms were necessary to ensure long term growth and improve the business and investment environment.
Albania – along with other Western Balkans countries – was recognised as a potential candidate country for EU accession in 2003 and officially submitted a membership application in April 2009. In October 2012, the EC recommended that Albania be granted EU candidate status, subject to completion of key measures in the areas of judicial and public administration reform and revision of the parliamentary rules of procedures.
