The President then participated in the 1st High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) under the auspices of the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He then added that sustainable development should be at the centre of a better coordinated UN system.
The establishment of the 1st HLPF was decided at the Rio+20 Conference. It aimed to provide political leadership, guidance and recommendations for sustainable development. The Forum also would follow-up and review progress in the implementation of sustainable development commitments.
On 25/09/13, José Manuel Barroso attended with Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, the high-level breakfast meeting to raise the visibility of the Third International Conference on Small Island Development States (SIDS) to be held in 2014.
