Visit of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, to the United States

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to New York where he notably met with Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank. He then met with Viktor Yanukovych, President of Ukraine, together with Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council. José Manuel Barroso also attended a bilateral meeting with Ollanta Humala, President of Peru.
The President then participated in the 1st High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) under the auspices of the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). In his speech the President highlighted that poverty and environmental degradation were unacceptable. José Manuel Barroso said that the EU would continue supporting the critical work of this new Forum to integrate better the three dimensions of sustainable development. He then added that sustainable development should be at the centre of a better coordinated UN system.
The establishment of the 1st HLPF was decided at the Rio+20 Conference. It aimed to provide political leadership, guidance and recommendations for sustainable development. The Forum also would follow-up and review progress in the implementation of sustainable development commitments.
On 25/09/13, José Manuel Barroso attended with Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, the high-level breakfast meeting to raise the visibility of the Third International Conference on Small Island Development States (SIDS) to be held in 2014. The President then made a speech at the Special Event on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The event focused on accelerating achievement of those Goals and setting the roadmap for agreeing on a sustainable development framework beyond the 2015 target date.
