Launch of the Global Sustainability Compact in Geneva, with the participation of Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC

Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, was in Geneva together with Dipu Moni, Bangladeshi Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Guy Ryder, Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), to co-launch the Global Sustainability Compact: a joint initiative for improving conditions for workers in Bangladeshi garment factories. The move is a response to the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Dhaka in April which resulted in over 1,100 deaths.
The Sustainability Compact seeks to improve labour, health and safety conditions for workers, as well as to encourage responsible behaviour by businesses in the ready-made garment industry in the South Asian country.
Representatives of Bangladeshi manufacturers, major European importers, trade unions and other key stakeholders supporting the initiative were present at the launch as well.
As part of his visit to Geneva, Karel De Gucht participated in the session entitled "Value Chains – Adding Value for Development?" which was organised by the ILO.
