Visit of Ali Larayedh, Head of the Tunisian Government, to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Ali Larayedh, Head of the Tunisian Government. Discussions focused on Tunisia's democratic political process, especially constitutional and elections, as well as its challenges - in particular with regard to regional development, economic recovery and security.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso highlighted that Europe was ready to send an Election Observation Mission, to provide technical assistance and support to civil society initiatives. He also announced that, as in 2011 and 2012, Tunisia would remain the primary beneficiary of the "Spring" (Support for Partnership, Reform and Inclusive Growth) programme in 2013, which was designed to support the progress made by Arab partners in transition. 40 million euros had been allocated in addition to approximately 400 million committed in 2011-2013 under the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI).
José Manuel Barroso then confirmed his will to achieve a Mobility Partnership with Tunisia. The President eventually offered his views on potential trade negotiations through a Complete and Advanced Free Trade Agreement (Cafta) to further align the Tunisian economic operators with the wider market.
