Second Speak Up! conference on media freedom in the Western Balkans and Turkey

Štefan Füle, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, participated in the second conference Speak Up! (entitled Speak Up! 2) organised by the EC in Brussels in order to assess the challenges faced by the media in the countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey. Speak Up!2, the largest event of this kind organised in the context of the enlargement process, brought together around 450 participants from the region and EU Member States – journalists, media analysts and politicians. They discussed freedom of expression in individual countries and possibilities to improve and enhance it. They also assessed progress achieved since the first Speak Up! conference in 2011.
The other participants of the conference were: Jerzy Buzek, Member of the EP, Fergus O’Dowd, Irish Minister of State with responsibility for the NewEra Project (at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and Environment, Community and Local Government), Dunja Mijatović, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe), and Joost Korte, Deputy Director-General of the DG "Enlargement" of the EC.
