Visit of László Andor, Member of the EC, to Latvia

László Andor, Member of the EC in charge of Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, went to Riga where he was received by Valdis Dombrovskis, Latvian Prime Minister. He then participated in the conference entitled "Beyond recovery: Foundations for inclusive growth in Latvia". He also met the Members of the European Affairs Committee of the Latvian Parliament, as well as the representatives of the Employers' Confederation of Latvia and the Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia.
During his stay, he visited the ESF-funded project 'Motivation programme for the unemployed homeless' in Riga. Hosted in a homeless shelter, this project aims to improve the motivation and skills of homeless people, including disabled people and ex-convicts.
During the summer, the shelter can accommodate 70-80 people per day, a number that doubles in the winter. Two third of the occupants are adults who are able to work but, due to long spells of unemployment, have lost contact with the working environment. The project started in January 2010 and will run until December 2013. 240 people will benefit from it, for a total ESF financing of 130 000 euro.
