Visit of Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC, to Italy

Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, travelled to Rome where he called on national ministers, regional representatives and civil servants from across Italy to improve the way regional funds are managed. He urged them to act urgently so EU investments, one of Italy's only sources of public investment in the current crisis, can support job creation and growth : in particular to tackle youth unemployment which is currently running at 40 %.
During his stay, Johannes Hahn delivered the key note speech at the Forum of Public Administration's "Towards Europe 2020" conference.
With Carlo Trigilia, Italian Minister for Territorial Cohesion, he discussed the challenge to use around €31 billion of current investments, as well to use future investments under the reformed Regional Policy for 2014-20.
Johannes Hahn pointed to the problem of weak administrations as a major obstacle. He called for politicians and civil servants to build on recent improvements. He met Members of the new Government as well as the Presidents of the regions of Sicily, Lazio and Calabria.
