Official opening of the European Emergency Response Centre

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Maroš Šefčovič, Vice President of the EC in charge of Inter-institutional Relations and Administration, Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Connie Hedegaard, Member of the EC in charge of Climate Action, and Tonio Borg, Member of the EC in charge of Health and Consumer Policy, participated in the official opening of the EC's Emergency Response Centre (ERC) at Rue de la Loi 84/86.
In his speech José Manuel Barroso underlined that the Centre was a prime example of how "more Europe" brought added, practical and tangible value to dealing with the challenges the EU was facing. In Europe, on average every year 10 000 people were tragically killed and 15 billion Euro of damage caused by natural and man-made disasters.
The ERC would play a central role to reduce this terrible toll and better protect Europe's citizens. Its core function was to bring together the collective knowledge and capacity of the Member States. The Centre would also support the Commission's humanitarian interventions and would be able to provide specialist services across the EC during emergency situations.
