Visit of Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC, to Jordan

Kristalina Georgieva Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, embarked on a three-day visit to Middle East, by starting in Jordan. In Amman, she announced an allocation of € 65 million in response to the rapidly growing scale of the humanitarian crisis resulting from the conflict in Syria. With more intense fighting in Syria and just three months after pledging € 100 million at the Kuwait donors' conference, the Commission is stepping up its effort to fund aid agencies because of the scale of the emergency. Millions of people have lost their homes and are fleeing the violence. Neighbouring countries are sheltering nearly 1.5 million refugees, bringing the capacity of hosting communities and humanitarian organisations close to breaking point. Kristalina Georgieva visited the Zaatari refugee camp, where the population has risen dramatically to an estimated 178 000 men, women and children. Later she continued northwards to Mafraq and the border where she was shown the transit centre for arriving refugees. Finally, she met with Nasser Judeh, Jordanian Minister for Foreign Affairs, and humanitarian partners working in Jordan before departing for Lebanon.
