Visit of Hailemariam Desalegn, Ethiopian Prime Minister, to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Hailemariam Desalegn, Ethiopian Prime Minister. The latter had chosen the EU for his first official visit. José Manuel Barroso notably took this opportunity to announce the allocation of additional 30 million euros for maternal health in Ethiopia. The political and economic relations between the EU and the country were also discussed, as well as regional security challenges.
The EU and Ethiopia had substantial and diversified economic and trade relations. Europe was the destination of over 40 % of Ethiopia's exports, making the EU the most important trade partner for the country. The President also congratulated Ethiopia on the country's progress in poverty reduction and Millennium Development Goals achievements.
