Visit of Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC, to Italy

Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, visited the Pompeii site in Campania Region, Italy where the European Union has co-financed a rehabilitation project following the collapse of the House of the Gladiators in 2010. The objective of the Pompeii Project is to initiate a systematic campaign of study, inventory – based on the most advanced technical and scientific methods – and restoration of significant portions of the archaeological site of Pompeii. The latter will proceed step by step and be based on a sound preliminary recognition of the situation at the level of several group of buildings. A consolidation of the rainfall regime is a priority, together with the buildings (insulae) stability. The EU invests EUR 41,811,000 via European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) whereas the total investment amounts EUR 105 000 000.
