Participation of Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the EC, and Cecilia Malmström, Member of the EC, in the launch of the EDPS' strategy for 2013-2014

Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, and Cecilia Malmström, Member of the EC in charge of Home Affairs, participated in the launch of the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) strategy for 2013-2014 with Peter Hustinx, EDPS, and Giovanni Buttarelli, European Data Protection Assistant Supervisor (EDPS).
The Strategy was based on a Strategic Review launched by the EDPS in July 2011. The aim of the Review was to identify priorities and respond to the increasing workload and broader scope of activities that the EDPS would face in the following years.
The EDPS noted that increasing exchanges of personal information and ever-evolving technologies meant that data protection’s visibility and relevance were greater than ever. At the same time, the Lisbon Treaty had considerably strengthened the rights to data protection and privacy in EU law. To improve the effectiveness of these rights, the EC proposed a new data protection legal framework in January 2012. This would have direct consequences for the EDPS.
