EU/US Energy Council, 05/12/2012

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, and Günther Oettinger, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, participated in the 4th EU/US Energy Council with Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State.
Discussions focused on the EU/US co-operation to enhance energy security through the diversification of gas and oil supply sources and routes. There was also a focus on the regulatory frameworks that encouraged more efficient use of energy sources. The meeting then looked at how to decarbonise the economy, to avert global climate change, while securing sustainable future growth. EU and US scientific and technological leadership, underpinned by carefully targeted funding and deeper Trans-Atlantic co-operation, was critical to achieving the necessary breakthroughs.
