José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Tim Hunt, Laureate of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2001, and Jules A. Hoffmann, Laureate of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2011, accompanied by Helga Nowotny, President of the European Research Council (ERC), and other researchers.
They have presented to the President an open "Letter from Nobel laureates and Fields Medallists" that emphasised the importance of EU research funding and warned against the consequences of budget cuts in this area.
The letter was signed by 44 Nobel laureates and 6 Fields medallists. The delegation has also handed in a petition “No cuts on research” in support of this cause; signed by over 131 000 citizens in Europe and across the globe.
