Visit of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, to Spain

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Cadiz where he met with Mariano Rajoy Brey, Spanish Prime Minister. Ahead of the Extraordinary European Council of 22-23/11/2012 the leaders stressed the importance of the EU budget for creating conditions for investment to growth and jobs in Europe. On Spain, they both welcomed that the country had taken effective measures correcting its excessive deficit.
José Manuel Barroso also expressed his appreciation to significant efforts that the government and the Spanish people were doing to ensure the sustainability of public finances and to boost competitiveness of the Spanish economy.
José Manuel Barroso then participated in the 22th Ibero-American Summit. In his speech, the President highlighted that no other part of the world was closer to Europe than the American continent, adding that they were natural allies and had developed a growing relationship of interdependence. He also emphasized the great potential of deeper cooperation for economic growth and international trade flows.
