Visit of Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Member of the EC, to South Africa

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Member of the EC in charge of Research, Innovation and Science, embarked on a visit to Cap Town, where she participated in a working breakfast with the Ministers and government officials of South Africa and other African countries. Among them, Derek Hanekom, South African Minister for Science and Technology, and Aaron Motsoaledi, South African Minister for Heath.
Máire Geoghegan-Quinn's visit was part of the celebrations of the 15th anniversary of the EU/South Africa science and technology agreement. During her stay, she visited several projects co-funded by the EU in the fields of health and technology, thanks to the Europe-Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP). She went to visit the clinic of Emavundleni, which specializes in testing new biomedical technologies that meet international standards. The centre also offers screening tests for sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis and diabetes. Máire Geoghegan-Quinn then went to several clinical centers, among them the Ekhaya Vac, which specializes in seeking treatment against tuberculosis. Finally, she met with several representatives of the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre.
Máire Geoghegan-Quinn also participated in the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding ERAfrica, which aims to encourage partnerships between African and European countries in the fields of research and development.
Still in Cap Town, she attended the presentation of the "Stadium" project, which proposes intelligent transport systems. She then visited the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio-telescope project. The monitoring center will manage the Meerkat telescope which is currently under construction and slated for completion in 2016. It is the precursor of the SKA project. Once completed, the SKA will be the largest radio-telescope in the world, with most of its equipment installed in Africa, mainly in South Africa and the rest of Australia.
Máire Geoghegan-Quinn went to Stellenbosch where she visited the University of the town. She held a speech during her participation in the Berlin 10 Open Access Conference.
Finally, she also visited the University of the Western Cape, located in Bellville.
